Course Objectives:                    

At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to:      

  • Introduce the AAPALM and how it serves the Physician Assistant community
  • Identify key legal terms and their meanings
  • Identify the most common causes for action against providers and how to avoid them.
  • Identify common pitfalls in the major components of charting: history taking, assessment and exam documentation and discharge instructions
  • Identify areas of potential risk on the part of the UC providers and strategies to avoid them

Faculty Bio:

Marsha Niven, MPAS, PA-C, AAPALM Secretary

I have been a practicing PA for 17 years, and have vast experience in Emergency Medicine, Urgent Care Medicine, and Occupational Medicine. I have had my own medical-legal consulting business for nearly a decade, reviewing cases for both plaintiff and defendant litigators and have served as an expert witness. I have been a member of the American Academy of PA's in Legal Medicine (AAPALM) since 2005 and currently serve on the Board of Directors.
