Course Description:

Whether you perform your billing services in-house or outsource them to a billing company, you want to ensure that each step of the revenue cycle is being effectively managed. The revenue cycle starts with registration and eligibility verification, collection of co-pays and deductibles, provider documentation, billing, and account follow-up. How can you determine that each of these tasks is being done in a best practice fashion? This presentation helps you to perform your own analysis or identify the skill set required of an outside consultant to help you determine your effectiveness as well as identify opportunities for improvement.

    •Describe the methodology for measuring the key indicators
    •Identify the key performance benchmarks in UCC billing
    •Calculate Average Patient charge, Net Collections per patient visit, Days in A/R, and Aging analysis
    •Identify the key types of chart reviews to optimize charge capture, E&M coding, and collections

Faculty Bio:  Martin Karpiel, MPA

Mr. Karpiel is president of Karpiel Consulting Group, a Long Beach, California consulting firm specializing in the “business of urgent care medicine”. His background includes experience as a Hospital Chief Operating Officer, urgent care operator and practice manger for Emergency Physician Groups.. His clients include community hospitals, independent emergency physician groups and urgent care centers. Mr. Karpiel is part owner of two very successful Urgent Care Centers. In Marina Del Rey and Burbank California. Both clinics see over 1,500 patients a month and have excellent customer satisfaction scores. The Burbank location is one of the preeminent occupational health providers in Los Angeles County. area. Both clinics have 4+ ratings on Google and Yelp. He is a nationally recognized expert in emergency services and ambulatory care management. He wrote the managed care book for the American College of Emergency Physicians, Managed Care in Emergency Medicine - Understanding the New Economics and Opportunities. This manual covers contracting, negotiating techniques, financial issues, cost containment and utilization management strategies, as well as fast track and observation units in the emergency department. His consulting firm provides services in all of these areas for their emergency physician group and hospital clients. Mr. Karpiel has assisted hospitals and physician groups in planning, developing and marketing urgent care centers. He has developed turnkey centers from the feasibility study, site location analysis through to pre-opening marketing of the center. Marty has also assisted existing centers in increasing patient revenue and volume as well as marketing new service lines for UCC’s including occupational health, pediatrics after hours and travel medicine.
