Frequently Missed Pediatric Orthopedic Injuries

1 hour Audio and Power Point Presentation

Recorded April 19, 2016

Course Description:

Pediatric patients frequently experience falls and other mild trauma that result in their seeking urgent care. While may injuries are easily diagnosed and managed, this session discusses some of the more subtle and often overlooked injuries - some common, some unusual - that you should keep in mind when seeing pediatric patients. Learn high-yield tips to help when reading pediatric X-rays as well as which injuries require transfer for emergent management.

Learning Objectives:

•Describe the unique anatomic characteristics of pediatric bones and how these impact diagnosing and managing pediatric fractures
•Discuss the importance of obtaining adequate elbow films, including a true lateral, to allow for a complete evaluation of pediatric elbow injuries.
•Recognize the subtle signs on pediatric elbow x-rays that assist the clinician in reliably diagnosing pediatric supracondylar fractures.
•Identify subtle pelvic avulsion fractures commonly seen in pediatric patients.
•Describe the evaluation and management of the limping child.
